Program
Gender role free dancing is the theme of LCFD dance camps. Our main focus is contra dancing, but we regularly supplement the program with English country dancing and for this camp we will also have Latin dancing (Salsa, Merengue) by Mariale Celimen.
Gender role free dancing mean you can dance either the man or woman's traditional role, no matter who you are.
You don't need to bring a partner. Don't be shy, just ask someone to dance. We mainly attract lesbian and gay women and men, yet we welcome and get anyone who wants to dance without reference to gender roles.
About Programming
Programming is never set until the last minute, which is why we can't give you exact details. Dancing is expected to begin the first day at 7:30 and wrap up on the last day at 3:30.
Dancing is fairly non-stop, with meal and sleeping breaks. The program is organized as a single main program track, with part time alternate tracks on Saturday. We have a variety show after dinner on Saturday, followed by the major dance, styled as a costume ball. For the variety show, anyone can do a skit, song, poem, story, comedy or other performance.
The contra dances are at all levels. There is usually a Saturday workshop for recent beginners to polish up a bit, though each contra dance is usually taught in a walk-through beforehand.
We may also have non-dancing breakout-room events: it is largely up to the campers to propose and lead these. Write to Chris Ricciotti to make your suggestion or have progamming questions answered.
Flyers
Going to another dance or fly-in? Bring flyers, become a distributor! (Most people get just one flyer, but you can choose to be a distributor and get 5, 10, 20 or more in our bulk mailing. You can also special-request flyers from camp@lcfd.org). See the downloads section on the right for available flyers.
Campsite
Camp Woodstock is in northeast Connecticut. This is a YMCA camp that hosts groups throughout the year. We will be the only group there for our weekend. It is a very nice looking camp sited on a lovely undeveloped lake. The lodge (heated) where we will dance is close to the lake; you can sit out on the covered porch and watch dancers inside and still be fairly close to the lake.
There is a second lodge that used to be the dining hall that can be used for dancing as well if we need it for parts of the program; it is not heated other than a large fireplace. The dining hall is in a new building with concrete floor so not suitable for dancing other than occasional workshops.
Housing
Accomodations are in two large dorm buildings that are heated, and several smaller heated cabins for 6 to 8 people each. In addition, there are a large number of unheated cabins that we can use; people who want more privacy—and are prepared for possibly cold weather—can use them.
Meals
Six meals and snacks are included in all registrations. Camp begins with a dinner buffet on Friday, since not everyone arrives at once. The last meal is lunch on Sunday.
Special Needs
If you have special housing needs, contact the registrar.
Meals will accomodate both vegetarians and omnivores. Jared has been working with our camp cooks for years to help plan menus.
Don't bring scented products (deodorants, soaps, perfumes). People have varying levels of chemical sensititivity, and in close quarters these scents will cause harm.
Ride Sharing
Campers need rides. Some fly in, others are naturally footpowered. Please be a kind soul and mark on your registration form your willingness to drive. We publish a list of people offering and needing rides, so that the needy can call the driver. Riders will call you in planty of time to arrange the favor.
Camp Directory
A camp directory is published with the contact information of other campers. The directory allows you to indicate if you are willing to host out-of-town dancers coming to a local dance. The directory is not published or allowed to be distributed elsewhere.
We can record separate directory and business/publicity addresses for those of you with townhomes and island retreat addresses.
A camp directory is printed for all campers to take. If you want to be omitted, mark your form. If you want only some information printed, indicate.
Donations
LCFD is a nonprofit organization under the umbrella of the Country Dance and Song Society's (CDSS) 501c(3) status and is able to offer scholarships funded by contributions by other members. The generosity of our friends has helped keep camp solvent. Donations are primarily used to allow other campers to attend on scholarship.
