FOR THE 21st ANNUAL

VICTORIAN AUTUMN HARVEST BALL!

It’s now been 21 years since our first Autumn Harvest Ball in 1997, and we are getting ready for another fabulous once-a-year event, the Harvest Ball!  Tickets are now ready to reserve. This is our community’s recreation of a fun and playful Victorian-era ball, providing a historical evening of classic smooth New England contras, quadrilles, mixers, couple dances and even parlor games from 1790 to about 1920. As with all our dances, all figures will be taught, and everyone is welcome to attend.

If you have been before, you know how wonderful this event is.
But if you haven't been before, here are some details:

CREATING AN AMAZING EVENT:

Thanks to the generous contributions of volunteers we get each year, we create an amazing setting in the dance hall for this event.  It's a lot of work but it's also a lot of fun!  And anyone who can help set up ahead of time, can get a reduced rather, or free admission!  If you can give us a hand and help us create this magic, let us know when you reserve your tickets.  Help is needed with decorating, getting ball cards set up, and getting items coordinated and ready for set up for dinner and dessert on Saturday evening.

THE FABULOUS POT LUCK DINNER!
At 5:30pm the night of the ball, we have an amazing candlelit dinner, made by you!  Bring your favorite homemade dishes to share, and join in this delicious feast that is second to none!  If you are planning to come to the dinner, please plan to bring a dish to share (enough for at least 6 people).  To help balance the menu, or if you need ideas, please contact us as noted below.  Volunteer assistance will be needed ahead of time to help set up dinner tables and the buffet table for potluck items.  Sam Arfer will be helping to coordinate the use of the kitchen for heating items.  If you have something that needs heating before eating, please be at the church by 4:30pm to use the oven and stove, as we will be serving dinner promptly at 5:30pm.

WALTZING AFTER DINNER

At 7:00pm, after dinner, and before the ball begins, we start the dancing portion of this event with waltzing.   It's a relaxed and lovely way to start the evening.  Ask anyone to dance, and join in.  If you are new to waltzing, we have plenty of experienced dancers who can help you.

BALL CARDS FOR THE DANCE

Ball cards were a part of Victorian Balls, and were used to secure partners for each dance.  Our tradition is that we sign on off on each other's ball cards after each dance, in an effort to keep dancing friendly and open to all, and to keep as a memory of all the lovely dances you shared with everyone throughout the evening.

THE MUSIC AND THE MASTERS OF CEREMONIES

Music for this evening is absolutely delightful, and each year, we are very fortunate to be able to have Spare Parts as our band: Bill Matthiesen on piano, Liz Stell on flute, and Eric Buddington on fiddle. Chris Ricciotti will be the Harvest Ball MC with guest caller, the fabulous Jeanette Watts, dancer and choreographer from North Carolina.

THE TOTALLY DELICOUS DECADENT DESSERT POTLUCK!

Halfway through the ball program, we have an extended break to enjoy a decadent array of delicious home made dessert goodies, again, made by you!  If you are planning to come to both the dinner and desert pot luck, you are welcome to bring food to both.  If you need to pick one or the other, bring food for dinner.  If you are planning on attending the dessert potluck only, bring food for the dessert potluck.  Volunteer help is always needed to help set up and then break down the dessert arrangement afterwards.

SO WHAT DO I WEAR?
I get this question every year.  This event is open to everyone, and for this special once a year event, we encourage attendees to wear something festive or colorful, or formal, or if you have it, period attire, but we do not have fashion police on the premises (and if you see someone dressed uniform, it is only their chosen attire for the evening!)   We want everyone to have a good time, and we want you to be comfortable.  Dancing will be lively, but elegant, and we'll be providing a more relaxed program as compared to our usual contra dance evenings, so if you decide to gussy up, the style of dances on the program will be comfortable for anyone wearing formal or period attire.   Here are some pictures of balls past to use as a guide.  If you want to go all out and want some ideas it doesn't have to be expensive, and it can be quite to do.  Feel free to contact us as noted below for ideas.
