Safety at LCFD Camp

We hope you have a great time at camp and feel safe and welcome. Everyone at camp is responsible for upholding the LCFD Code of Conduct, and the LCFD Safety Team is here to help if problems arise.

Overview of Our Code of Conduct

The goal of the Code of Conduct is to foster physical and emotional safety so that dance camp is fun and inclusive for all. Folk dancing involves physical proximity and contact. As such, obtaining consent and making concerted efforts to communicate clearly are particularly important. We do not tolerate harassment in any form. Below is an overview of our policy, or read the full Code of Conduct.

Values
  • Inclusivity: Be open to dancing with people of many characteristics such as gender identity, age, sexual orientation, relationship status, experience level, etc. Refer to others by their chosen pronouns or in non-gendered ways.
  • Respect: Treat all with respect—including dancers, callers, musicians, organizers, staff, etc.
  • Consent and Communication: When asked to dance, feel free to agree or politely decline. If someone declines your invitation, do not invite them again during the same dance session. Communicate with partners about role preference, injuries, flourishes, sensitivities, etc.
  • Physical Safety and Comfort: Dance to avoid injuring others, including nearby dancers as well as your dance partner. Only do dance flourishes with your partner if there is mutual consent. Respect LCFD’s fragrance-free policy by avoiding scented products (soap, deodorant, etc.) while at camp.

Prohibited Behavior
The following behavior is not allowed (see the full Code of Conduct for the complete list):
  • Discrimination, harassment, or other unwanted behavior which makes a person feel offended, humiliated, or intimidated
  • Arriving intoxicated or using drugs, alcohol, weapons, or tobacco on-site
  • Putting others’ physical safety at risk
  • Intimate physical contact or sexual attention without enthusiastic consent

Safety Team

The LCFD Safety Team are volunteers from our community who are available to help if problems arise. The Safety Team coordinators are Ollie Cultrara and Daniel Smith.

How We Can Help

If something or someone is bothering you or violates the Code of Conduct, please reach out to the Safety Team. Anyone may report concerns, whether something happened to you or you observed something that concerned you. Your courage in reporting helps ensure everyone’s safety and creates a welcoming space for the entire spectrum of our LGBTQIA+ community.

Please report concerns as soon as possible. The Safety Team will respond within 24 hours to reports received during camp. A volunteer will follow up with you to further discuss the incident, and will work with you to determine a resolution.

How to make a report

Your options for reporting concern are:
  • Talk to a Safety Volunteer (look for folks wearing a yellow Safety Team button)
  • Fill out an online Safety Report Form with the option of submitting anonymously. Paper forms are also available on site at camp at the Dining Hall.
  • Email [email protected]

Privacy and Confidentiality: The Safety Team understands that concerns about privacy and confidentiality often cause reluctance to speak up about problems. We thank you for your courage in reporting to help keep our community safe. Safety Team members will communicate internally about reports only to the extent needed to safeguard our community, and we will do our best to respect everyone’s privacy and specific requests for anonymity. Anonymous reporting is better than no reporting; however, depending on the situation, anonymous reporting may constrain the Safety Team’s ability to address the situation effectively.
